Computer Science Graduate Pay | Google and Facebook Factor | Show me the money!

C_badge_orange Since the popularization of startups in the Valley such as Google, Youtube, Facebook etc. , most Computer Science graduates want to work for the next cool product/service that will change the world. Google optimized search in many different ways, Youtube was the pioneer in making online video mainstream, and Facebook helped us better manage our contacts of people who we have in real life.

Who would really turn down a job offer to work for those companies? Well besides me, and a few others, not many people would.

Salaries for Computer Science graduates, especially at companies like Google and Facebook, are starting to increase. This is will and has had significant impacts on jobs both south and north of the border. How do tech companies compete for top talent when Google and Facebook are offering those types of packages? It makes it even  difficult to start up companies in the Valley but it also drains people from north of the border as companies in Canada do not have that type of pay packages.

These are definitely good times to be a Computer Science graduate. I don't see this trend  dying down for quite some time yet either. I like the hybrid graduates - people who study both Computer Science and another discipline, their thought process seems to be developed and allows them to see problems holistically. Personally, I studied Computer Science and Economics.

Rack up another point for Computer Science! :  Show me the money!

Indeed, these are good times to be a recent graduate starting your IT career. Everyone I know has managed to land their first IT developer job sooner or later, (personally, I dove in quickly, started working my first developer job in Nov. '06 I'm at my 2nd job now.) I have tremendous respect for those who work in the industry full-time 9-5 like me, it takes a lot of dedication to do it, staying in school drinking beers, doing Masters degrees and such is pretty pointless, its experience that all employers want and thats the bottom line because that is how you truly learn... and yes, I can't complain about the salary rates either :) its nice to have money these days.

I wouldn't be so sure about the trend not continuing. just two weeks ago we had a little stock market scare, if that baby goes down pretty much so will most of our jobs :) But thats just the economy, thats life. Then sit back and get ready to embrace the web 3.0 revolution.
